The image on coins depicts a tree that is symbolic of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joining together in a living chain in the Baltic Way. The leaves of the tree are in the colors of the flags of the three Baltic nations. On the reverse of both coins is a map, in the graphic elements of which for the first time the colors of the Republic of Lithuania’s tricolor flag are encoded in heraldic symbols.
The coin is a dedication to the peaceful demonstration of 23 August 1989 when about 2 million people from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined their hands to form a human chain, which for 15 minutes was spanning over 600 km through the capital cities of Tallinn, Vilnius and Riga.
