I live in Scotland, and I love it, but there are so many things that I miss about Vilnius. When I have a chance, I try to tell this to my Scottish friends, strongly encouraging them to visit my beloved city.

In fact, Vilnius is the perfect European city break destination this summer.

According to online reservation site Hotels.com’s annual Hotel Price Index report, budget travelers looking for a weekend or short getaway within Europe should consider the city of Vilnius, where the average hotel room comes in at €61.

The Hotel Price Index looked at more than 155,000 properties around the world from 2012.

Visit the Lithuanian capital this summer as it prepares to host a number of major events.

There will be plenty of dancing and singing going on during May, when the city holds the international contemporary dance festival New Baltic Dance, the Vilnius Salsa Festival, the Street Music Day and the Europe’s Day.

May concludes with the exhibition Wine Days Vilnius 2013, before June sees the Vilnius Challenge, an urban adventure race, and the international music event Vilnius Festival 2013 taking place, among others.

The summer's festivities conclude on the 23 and 24 August, when a traditional craft fair is being held.

As well as exciting international events, Vilnius boasts a Unesco World Heritage-listed Old Town, brimming with fabulous Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

With more than forty percent of the city made up of parkland and open spaces, there are also plenty of places to enjoy a summer picnic or a spot of sunbathing.
