Lithuania makes list of top 10 ethical destinations

If you're interested in sustainable tourism, consider Lithuania, chosen by Ethical Traveler as the best places to visit in 2014.

Every year, Ethical Traveler conducts a study of mostly developing countries, evaluating their records on environmental protection, social welfare, and human rights. These destinations may lack the glamour of Paris or Berlin, but they are wealthy in natural wonders and intriguing cultures.

In alphabetical order, the 2014 top 10 are:

1. The Bahamas

2. Barbados

3. Cape Verde

4. Chile

5. Dominica

6. Latvia

7. Lithuania

8. Mauritius

9. Palau

10. Uruguay

Lithuania together with neighboring Latvia scored highest in environmental protection and social welfare.

“A country the UN designates as having ‘very high human development,’ Lithuania reached its Millennium Development Goal (MDG) for under 5 mortality rate, which has dropped by an impressive 52% in Lithuania since 2000”.

Lithuania also received the highest possible score from Freedom House in the categories of Political Rights and Civil Liberties as well as high Press Freedom ratings.

Ethical Traveler is a project of the Earth Island Institute and a no profit all-volunteer organization.

“By visiting these countries, we use our economic leverage as travelers to support best practices,” says Ethical Traveler in its latest report publsihed on December 02, 2013.
