Rochester Mayor Lovely A. Warren and Alytus Mayor Jurgis Krasnickas exchanged greetings with each other over the internet, and opened the concerts, as did Lithuanian ambassador to the U.S. Žygimantas Pavilionis.
Together, we defeated communism, created the most successful alliance in the history and are building the largest, freest and most democratic transatlantic trade block now, but all these and future projects will last only if are supported by the young generation. Today’s concert is s a nice example of how a young, innovative and creative generation takes leadership in developing joint transatlantic projects,” Pavilionis said.
This groundbreaking cultural event, initiated by the Alytus-Rochester Sister Cities Committee, led by Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Rochester Rimas Česonis, celebrated the 5th anniversary of the sister cities relationship approved by the Rochester City Council in 2009.
More than 160 young musicians of the Alytus Youth Symphony Orchestra, Svajone, from the Alytus Music School, and the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra from the Hochstein School of Music and Dance performed classical and contemporary selections, including their respective national anthems.
In this live streaming over Internet concert, the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra in Rochester performed on stage while, at the same time, on screen behind the orchestra, the audience saw the Alytus Youth Symphony Orchestra performing from Lithuania.
The same occurred in Lithuania.
This concert was the first of its kind in both Rochester and Lithuania.
