“Seni krienai” (Old horseradishes) from Texas bagged the trophy at The 11th Lithuanian Embassy Basketball Tournament, Saturday, June 7th, after clinching a 66-65 victory against last year’s winner “Gelezinis Vilkas” (Iron Wolf) from New York.

Jordan Mejeras, MVP of the tournament, took control of the game with stability, energy and some great shoots.

This year the traditional basketball tournament, organized by the Lithuanian Embassy in the United States and the Lithuanian Athletic Union of North America (LAUNA), was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of continuous Lithuanian diplomatic presence in the historical Washington DC embassy building.

A record 12 teams competed in the tournament, including the American Lithuanian teams from Washington, New York, Chicago, Texas, Baltimore, and other places.

The staff of the Lithuanian Embassy together with their colleagues from other diplomatic missions united to form a team “Diplomats #UnitedforUkraine”.

The tournament was also attended by the staff of the US State Department.

Lithuanian ambassador Žygimantas Pavilionis along with LAUNA Chair of the Board Laurynas Misevičius handed prizes to the winners.

“The 90th anniversary of continuous Lithuanian diplomatic presence in the historical Washington DC embassy building is a special and important moment, a symbol of our freedom and strength, and there is no better way to mark this anniversary than basketball, which for many Lithuanians became a catalyst for Lithuania’s freedom from Soviet communism and was a significant force that resurrected national pride”, ambassador Pavilionis said.
