WW I ‘Doughboy’ John Joseph Straukas

I recently met with Debbie, Richard and Nancy Kaylor of Riverton to hear stories and see photos of their deceased Lithuanian immigrant grandfather and proud veteran John Joseph Straukas. Several of the most striking photos of John Joseph, born in 1890 in Plunge, Lithuania, relate to his service in U.S. Army Company F, Fifth Battalion, 22nd Engineers, in World War I.

Lithuanian flag in Aspen

Aspen (Colorado, US) is not a typical place to associate Lithuania with. Yet, on February 16, 2014, for the second year in a row, a Lithuanian tricolor flag was flown proudly at the ski slopes of Aspen. The Lithuanian national flag was brought to Aspen by Dr. John Prunskis whom in 2012 the Lithuanian Government had appointed as an Honorary Consul in the state of Colorado with the office in Aspen.

Our Day at the Museum

“Lithuanians in Springfield” was the title of an exhibit Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Illinois State Museum. Sponsored, designed and manned by members of our Lithuanian-American Club, the exhibit was part of the museum’s annual Multicultural Day. However, this was the first time the club mounted a display.

Stanley Balzekas, Lithuania’s Honorary Consul in Palm Beach, Florida and the President and Founder of the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago, was awarded the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star for his work in promoting Lithuania’s name and preserving Lithuanian culture.

Honoring Lithuanians in Michigan, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder issued proclamation declaring Feb.16, 2014 as Lithuanian Independence Day in Michigan.

New Orleans: Happy National Day, Lithuania!

New Orleans City Council issued a proclamation on February 18th congratulating Lithuania on its Independence Day.

On Feb.2, the Hochstein School of Music and Dance Youth Symphony Orchestra and its counterpart in Rochester’s newest sister city, Alytus, Lithuania, presented a joint public concert, live over the Internet, at the Cultural Life Center of Roberts Wesleyan College.
