On 16 February, the 3rd Honorary Consulate of Lithuania in India was officially opened in Kolkata, India, on the occasion of the Day of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania. The Honorary Consulate is headed by a businessman Arvind Kumar Sukhani.
Svaja Vansauskas Worthington of Chugiak speaks to Alaskastar.com about her Lithuanian heritage and her job as an Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Alaska.
“Lithuania has been a big part of my life always,” Alaskastar.com quotes Worthington saying. “I always have been aware of it. It was my first language. Before I became consul, I taught my children and grandchildren the culture of Lithuania.”

Lithuania’s ambassador to the United States Žygimantas Pavilionis was in Brattleboro on June 6 to announce that local resident Kerry Secrest will serve as the Vermont Honorary Consul of Lithuania.
Pavilionis said for a small country like Lithuania the honorary counsuls serve an important role in reaching out to local populations to spread Lithuanian culture, as well as to open up business opportunities and trade between the two countries.
The consulate was opened in Vermont during the Strolling of the Heifers weekend to recognize that both Lithuania and Vermont have strong agricultural economies.
The ambassador encouraged summit attendees to take the opportunity for bilateral cooperation and use strengths of the both countries.
Kerry Secrest is an American Lithuanian of the fourth generation. After graduating from Vilnius University in 1991, she spent two years in Vilnius, where she was teaching English. After returning to the United States Secrest joined the new Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, D.C., as the Advisor for Educational and Cultural Affairs. She left four years later to get her graduate degree at SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, and after working a few years in Washington, D.C., for the American Red Cross Secrest moved in 2003 to Brattleboro.
In an intreview to Reformer Secrest said:
I am fortunate to know a lot of people in Lithuania in a number of sectors and how to leverage those relationships to facilitate economic and cultural opportunities for both Lithuania and Vermont. Lithuania is situated at the geographic center of Europe. It could serve as a great connection to Europe for Vermont exports, and a gateway in particular to Eastern Europe for Vermont businesses.
Stanley Balzekas, Lithuania’s Honorary Consul in Palm Beach, Florida and the President and Founder of the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago, was awarded the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star for his work in promoting Lithuania’s name and preserving Lithuanian culture.
On Feb.2, the Hochstein School of Music and Dance Youth Symphony Orchestra and its counterpart in Rochester’s newest sister city, Alytus, Lithuania, presented a joint public concert, live over the Internet, at the Cultural Life Center of Roberts Wesleyan College.
Mrs. Svaja Vansauskas Worthington has been appointed recently as a Lithuanian Honorary Consul for the State of Alaska. She was born into a prominent family in Lithuania, but grew up in the United States. Svaja did not see her home country until 1999, more than 50 years after leaving it during the war, when she returned for her grandparents’ and aunt’s reburial ceremony. She has made many trips to it since then, always feeling a strong attachment to its people and land.
