The Russian parliament approved Saturday president Putin’s request to use a military force to "defend" Russia’s interests in Crimea, Ukraine.

Remember what happened to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia in 1940?  Now exactly the same is happening with Ukraine. Who told that history can't repeat itself? Same Russian scenario is not changing for decades. And why should they change or adapt it if it works just fine? No reaction from the West every time, except expressing the "deep concerns".

Don't be indifferent this time. Please, react. It is time to stop the Kremlin hegemony.

The 2014 celebration of Lithuanian Independence Day took place on February 16. It was organized by the Lithuanian community in Brazil, chaired by Waldemar Maliska Sidaravicius. The event program began with placing flowers in the Republic of Lithuania Square in honor of all Lithuanians who fought for the independence of the country, and followed with a Mass and cultural performances. More than 300 people attended the celebration.

Lithuanian flag in Aspen

Aspen (Colorado, US) is not a typical place to associate Lithuania with. Yet, on February 16, 2014, for the second year in a row, a Lithuanian tricolor flag was flown proudly at the ski slopes of Aspen. The Lithuanian national flag was brought to Aspen by Dr. John Prunskis whom in 2012 the Lithuanian Government had appointed as an Honorary Consul in the state of Colorado with the office in Aspen.

On February 16, 2014, Lithuanian community in Argentina, made up of Lithuanian Societies Nemunas and Mindaugas, together with Lithuanian radio broadcast "Ecos de Lituania”, held Lithuanian Independence Day celebration in Berisso city. The event took place at the Lithuanian monument The Pensive Christ, and was attended by Lithuanian Society Nemunas Chairman Esteban Dulke, President of the Commission of Lithuanian affairs of South America in the Executive Committee of the World Lithuanian Community Juan Ignacio Fourment Kalvelis, representatives of Lithuanian Society Mindaugas board and other members of the community.

Although it is hard to give an exact number of Lithuanian immigrants to Argentina, as those who immigrated before 1918 carried Russian passport, it is estimated that during 1920s about 35,000 Lithuanians permanently settled in the country.

Stanley Balzekas, Lithuania’s Honorary Consul in Palm Beach, Florida and the President and Founder of the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago, was awarded the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star for his work in promoting Lithuania’s name and preserving Lithuanian culture.

Honoring Lithuanians in Michigan, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder issued proclamation declaring Feb.16, 2014 as Lithuanian Independence Day in Michigan.

New Orleans: Happy National Day, Lithuania!

New Orleans City Council issued a proclamation on February 18th congratulating Lithuania on its Independence Day.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius conferred the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star, the award of honour of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to President of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) Carl Gershman, in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 18, 2014, for his efforts in promoting freedom around the world.
