Two A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots with the 442nd Fighter Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., landed at Lielvarde Air Base in Latvia in the beggining of September, marking the first time U.S. fighter aircraft landed in the Baltic states. One of the Air Force Reserve A-10 pilots making the historic landing was a Lithuanian-American Lt. Col. Michael Leonas. Taking advantage of the opportunity that he is already in the region, Col. Michael Leonas decided to explore his Lithuanian roots and flew to the country.
Air Force Reserve Command website tells the story.
"Flying over I did have some emotions knowing what my family went through here during World War II, but at the same time it's awesome to be here and be a part of this history. I don't get to do that every day".
